A mannequin of Premier Giorgia Meloni
doing a Fascist salute was burned at the end of an anti-fascist'
carnival at a town near Rieti north of Rome, spurring bipartisan
condemnation and solidarity with the Italian government chief
and leader of the rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party.
A video of the burning at Poggio Mirteto, accompanied by
applause and choruses of "we are all anti-fascists", went viral
before being picked up by news outlets across Italy.
FdI Senate Whip Lucio Malan said the "extremely bad taste"
incident was the "fruit of the climate of hatred that is fuelled
by statements from various political exponents", while the
centre-left Democratic Party (PD) was among the opposition
groups that voiced solidarity with Meloni.
