Pope Francis continued his treatment
for bronchitis and double pneumonia at Rome's Gemelli hospital
on Friday morning, Vatican sources said.
The 88-year-old Argentine pontiff "woke up, had breakfast, read
the newspapers regularly and continued his treatment and
respiratory physiotherapy," the sources said.
The sources added that it has not yet been decided how the
pope's Angelus address will be given on Sunday.
Francis was admitted to the hospital on February 14 and, on the
two Sundays after, the text of Angelus address was released
without the pope reading it out.
Earlier on Friday, the Vatican said Francis had another good
night of sleep at Gemelli.
"As in recent days, the night passed calmly, and the pope is now
resting," read a Holy See Press Office statement.
On Thursday the Vatican said the pope's clinical condition had
continued to improve, while remaining "complex," adding that his
prognosis remains guarded. Vatican sources said after Thursday's
medical update was released that the pope's condition is no
longer critical.
"For the second time, there is no mention of a critical
condition," the sources said.
"So we can say that we have come out of the most critical phase
and we are back to what was previously described as a complex
picture.
"The bulletin again speaks of an improvement, a slight one, but
an improvement, but the fact that the prognosis is reserved
means that the doctors still have concerns".
There was widespread concern at the weekend when the Vatican
said his condition was critical after he suffered respiratory
crises.
