Pope Francis had another good night of sleep at Rome's Gemelli hospital, the Vatican said on Friday.
"As in recent days, the night passed calmly, and the pope is now resting," read a Holy See Press Office statement.
The 88-year-old Argentine pontiff was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago and is being treated for bronchitis and double pneumonia On Thursday the Vatican said the pope's clinical condition had continued to improve, while remaining "complex" adding that his prognosis remains guarded.
The pope's condition is no longer critical, Vatican sources said after Thursday's medical update was released.
"For the second time, there is no mention of a critical condition," the sources said. "So we can say that we have come out of the most critical phase and we are back to what was previously described as a complex picture.
"The bulletin again speaks of an improvement, a slight one, but an improvement, but the fact that the prognosis is reserved means that the doctors still have concerns".
There was widespread concern at the weekend when the Vatican said his condition was critical after he suffered respiratory crises.
