The government's new femicide bill is
a major step forward in protecting women from violence, Premier
Giorgia Meloni said after cabinet launched the bill Friday.
"Today the government is taking another step forward in the
systemic action it has been carrying out since it took office to
combat violence against women and to protect victims," she said.
"The Council of Ministers has passed an extremely significant
bill, which introduces the crime of femicide into our legal
system as an autonomous crime, punishing it with life
imprisonment, and provides for aggravating circumstances and
increases in sentences for the crimes of personal mistreatment,
stalking, sexual violence and revenge porn.
"These are provisions that I consider very important and that we
strongly wanted to give a boost to the fight against this
intolerable scourge".
Meloni thanked the ministers "who worked on the measure and who
allowed us to achieve this important result on the eve of
Women's Day".
