The cabinet on Friday approved a bill
instituting the crime of femicide and other measures to combat
violence against women on the eve of International Women's Day
on March 8.
"Femicide becomes a new autonomous crime" and is "punishable by
life imprisonment", said the Minister for Family and Equal
Opportunities Eugenia Roccella during a press conference
featuring several ministers following the cabinet meet that
approved the bill.
"Femicide - she explained - is a word that we use regularly but
until now it had never been included in the penal code. It is a
truly breakthrough development, not only legally but also on a
cultural level".
Italy is enduring a spate of femicides.
