President Sergio Mattarella on Tuesday
had lunch with Japanese Emperor Naruhito in Tokyo, the first
institutional appointment on a long state visit that will also
take the Italian president to Kyoto and Hiroshima.
Mattarella was accompanied by his daughter Laura who met Empress
Masako.
Speaking at the Diet later, Mattarella said:
"In recent years, the collaboration between Italy and Japan has
grown in every direction. We also have full harmony in
international forums from the UN to the G20. The rotation in the
presidency of the G7 has well expressed this harmony. There has
been a progressive expansion of the collaboration and this state
visit has this purpose, to underline the trust and the great
mutual esteem".
