Italian Foreign Minister Antonio
Tajani has signed a joint statement with his counterparts from
France, Germany and the UK backing the Arab plan for the future
of Gaza, the four countries said on Saturday.
"We, the Foreign Ministers of France, Germany, Italy and the
United Kingdom, welcome the Arab initiative for a recovery and
reconstruction plan for Gaza," the statement said.
"The plan sets out a realistic path for the reconstruction of
Gaza and promises - if implemented - a swift and sustainable
improvement of the catastrophic living conditions for the
Palestinians living in Gaza".
The Arab proposal, which would see the Gaza Strip being governed
by the Palestinian Authority, is an alternative to United States
President Donald Trump's plan for the US to take over the
enclave.
The Italian-British-French-German statement said Hamas must not
be allowed to govern Gaza in the future, nor pose a threat to
Israel.
