The Italian judiciary's self-governing
body, the Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM), on Friday said
rulings by the supreme Court of Cassation must be respected
after members of the government criticised a ruling ordering the
government to compensate migrants stopped from disembarking from
a coastguard ship in 2018 as part of the then government's
closed ports policy to NGO run migrant ships.
The CSM said "its decisions, certainly open to criticism like
any judicial decision, must however be respected because they
protect the principle of equality and manifestation of the right
to receive judicial protection established by art. 113 of the
Constitution.
"The Constitution is a common good of Italian citizens and must
be protected by all institutional actors".
A formal request will be made on Monday, the CSM added, to file
a plea for protection of Cassation judges due to the statements
of some members of the institutions.
