President Sergio Mattarella said
Wednesday that Kyiv must have international security guarantees
for an agreement to end the war in Ukraine to lead to lasting
peace after meeting Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in
Tokyo.
"Tokyo and Rome hope that a just peace in line with the
principles of the UN charter, adequately guaranteed at the
international level, can be found for Ukraine, to put an end to
this tragedy that the Russian aggression of three years ago
caused," Mattarella said.
The Italian head of State also stressed the need for open
markets and the respect of international law.
"Italy knows it can build an increasingly solid partnership with
Japan to the benefit not only of our peoples, but of a
rules-based international order, a free, open, inclusive,
peaceful, international order," Mattarella said, "with certain
rules, applicable to all countries and regardless of any
considerations of economic or military power.
"These certain, clear rules, applicable to all, are the only
possible safeguard for international stability.
"The hope for peace is a hope that Japan and Italy share, and
they are making an important contribution in this regard, with
the creation of open societies, with markets open to
collaboration, with a willingness to cooperate in every field,
with anyone, with any other country, with mutual respect and
mutual trust.
"We hope that this criteria will be adopted in every part of the
world to ensure the... stability of peace".
