Deputy Premier, Transport Minister and
League leader Matteo Salvini was critical on Tuesday after
European Commission President For Ursula von der Leyen announced
a plan to 'rearm Europe' that she said could mobilise close to
800 billion euros.
The plan will give member states more fiscal space for defence
expenditure and include loans for defence investments.
"European states can only go into debt to arm themselves for
Ursula von der Leyen," Salvini said at a Assolombarda logistics
conference.
"I hope that what I have read is wrong.
"I remember what we have not been able to do in recent years to
invest in healthcare, education and support for businesses and
families (because of budget rules).
"Is this the right way to support our children and leave behind
a continent at peace?.
"Let's think about it".
