Premier Giorgia Meloni said Friday
that her cabinet has given the green light to a bill paving the
way for Italy's return to nuclear power.
Italy abandoned nuclear power following a referendum in the wake
of the Chernobyl disaster but the government plans to return to
atomic energy with small latest-generation reactors to reduce
reliance on imports and cut greenhouse gas emissions in view of
the climate crisis.
"Today the government also approved another important measure to
guarantee safe, clean, low-cost energy, capable of ensuring
energy security and strategic independence for Italy," Meloni
said in a video posted on social media after a cabinet meeting
in which aid for people and firms struggling with high energy
bills was approved too.
"I'm obviously talking about nuclear energy, which we are now
asking parliament to give its opinion about.
"We intervened to give an immediate response to the needs of the
moment, but we also decided to look to the future with long-term
decisions, because this is what Italy needs - courageous,
structural decisions.
"It is a commitment we made to the Italian people and it is a
commitment we intend to respect".
