European Affairs Minister Raffaele
Fitto said he was honoured after European Commission President
Ursula von der Leyen nominated him executive vice president for
cohesion and reforms in her new team on Tuesday.
"I am honoured by the nomination received from Ursula von der
Leyen, and I thank her for the esteem and trust she has shown me
with this choice," Fitto said in a statement.
"This decision is a great recognition for Italy, a founding (EU)
country that has always been at the forefront of the European
integration process.
"I intend to exercise the role entrusted to me, once the process
of approving the new Commission is complete, with the utmost
commitment and in full compliance with the Treaties and their
spirit, in the knowledge that the next five years will be
crucial for the future of the EU and its citizens".
