"Italy is at the side of African nations in the protection and enhancement of their extraordinary cultural heritage, in line with the Mattei Plan. We are pleased to provide the expertise of the Ministry of Culture to strengthen the capacities of our partners in Africa in the implementation of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention. I thank ICCROM for collaborating in the realisation of this innovative programme of exchange of experiences and dialogue between heritage experts'.
This was stated by the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, commenting on the conclusion of the WHAPS International Forum - World Heritage in Africa: Processes and Strategies, held in Masvingo, Zimbabwe. This is an international training and cooperation programme promoted by the National School of Heritage and Cultural Activities, founded by the Ministry of Culture, and the International Centre of Studies for the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (ICCROM). The initiative aims to strengthen the skills of African cultural heritage professionals, who have to deal with the complexity of the UNESCO World Heritage List nomination processes and then effectively manage heritage sites. The WHAPS programme responds to the guidelines of the Ministry of Culture in the framework of the Mattei Plan for Africa, with the aim of strengthening cultural relations between Italy and the African continent through cooperation and cultural exchange actions.
