Organised by the Italian Embassy in Washington in collaboration with Netflix, the US premiere of the new series "Il Gattopardo", available on the platform starting today, was held last night in Washington, at the headquarters of the Motion Picture Association.
During the evening, the first episode was screened in the original Italian language version (with subtitles), to mark the strong Italian imprint of the series.
The Ambassador of Italy to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, emphasised how "the interest that Tomasi di Lampedusa's novel continues to arouse even here in the United States, more than sixty years after its publication, is a sign of the topicality of the themes addressed in The Leopard and of the fascination that Sicily exerts overseas: we hope that more and more Americans, also thanks to the new Netflix series, will take an interest in the unparalleled history and culture of our country and choose to visit our islands, also to discover the many beauties of which our territories are rich".
At the opening, a video message from actors Benedetta Porcaroli, Deva Cassel and Saul Nanni, who greeted the audience from Rome, where they presented the preview at the Teatro dell'Opera, in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli.
In addition to Ambassador Zappia, speakers included Bela Bajaria, Netflix's global head of content, and Charles Rifkin, President of the Motion Picture Association, the association that brings together the most important American film studios, including Netflix. In particular, Bajaria highlighted how 'Il Gattopardo' represents for the global streaming giant an important investment made in Italy, where the new series was entirely made.
The event was attended by many important guests, a sign of the American public's interest in the new Netflix series and in the story made famous by Luchino Visconti's 1963 masterpiece.
