The Italian Ambassador to Tanzania, Giuseppe Coppola, presented letters of credence to the President of the Union of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani. The Comorian president hoped for a further strengthening, on a bilateral and multilateral level, of the already excellent relations with Italy and recalled, in a spirit of friendship, his participation, as president of the African Union, at the Italy-Africa summit in January 2024.
Ambassador Coppola, together with Honorary Consul Saverio Grillone, also held talks with the Ministers of Energy, Water and Hydrocarbons, Aboubacar Said Anli, Agriculture, Fisheries and Handicrafts, Daniel Ali Bandar, and Environment and Tourism, Abubakar Ben Mahmoud, who called for a greater Italian presence in the archipelago.
With the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Imam Abdillah, possible ways to give new impetus to bilateral relations were discussed, based on the initiatives currently being promoted by Italy in the fields of waste management, renewable energy and university cooperation.
The diplomat also met with the small but dynamic Italian community, which also includes the head coach of the Comorian national football team and former Italian Serie A player, Stefano Cusin. Located in the Mozambique channel, the Comoros archipelago has a strategic location for trade and security in the western Indian Ocean and has great potential especially in the blue economy and tourism sector. On 6 July 2025, the Union of the Comoros will celebrate 50 years of independence.
