The Ambassador of Italy to Ecuador, Giovanni Davoli, travelled to Tulcán in the northern province of Carchi to attend the opening of the Second Transboundary Training Course on Forest Fire Prevention and Mitigation in the border region between Ecuador and Colombia.
The course, aimed at volunteers from local communities, is part of the Amazonia Sin Fuego and Amazonia+ Programmes managed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation with funds from the European Union and the Fondo Italo
Ecuadorian Fund for Sustainable Development (FIEDS) and aims to strengthen capacities in the use and comprehensive management of fire, protect the natural heritage and improve the quality of life of communities.
A similar activity took place on 17 February in Espindola in the southern province of Loja, targeting communities on the border between Ecuador and Peru.
In his greeting to the participants and authorities present, which included representatives of the Ministries of the Environment of Ecuador and Colombia, Davoli emphasised that Italy is at Ecuador's side in managing the fires, as it has concretely demonstrated during the many emergencies that occurred during 2024.
However, he added, the use of prevention tools, including the active involvement of the communities affected by the phenomenon, is crucial. Davoli then thanked the participants for their commitment to preserving the environment and the Amazon basin's splendid natural heritage.
