Jonathan Karl, top journalist and well-known face of ABC News, is the new winner of the Urbino Award. This was announced by the Ambassador of Italy to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, during an event she hosted at Villa Firenze in Washington.
"Journalism is an essential element in the life of our democracies: it helps the public to understand reality, the facts that surround us, distinguishing real news from fake news," the ambassador pointed out. "Quality journalism, like Jonathan Karl's, plays an irreplaceable role and deserves to be recognised and supported," she added. Zappia confirmed his support for the Urbino Prize, which recognises and celebrates excellence in American journalism. Karl will receive the Prize at the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino in March 2025.
"We are proud that the Urbino Award is now in its eighteenth year and with great energy brings the name of our city to the United States. We thank the Ambassador of Italy in Washington, Mariangela Zappia, for the great support she has given to the project. The award has great potential for tourism promotion and for Italian companies that have a presence in the US. As Municipal Administration, it will be our task to give the utmost support to ensure its future growth,' said Municipal Councillor for Tourism and Internationalisation Francesco Guazzolini.
An experienced correspondent, Jonathan Karl has interviewed the main protagonists of American politics over the last 30 years. During the event hosted in Washington, Karl spoke about the main challenges facing the world of information. The founder of the Urbino Prize, Giovanni Lani, and the Head of Culture of the City of Urbino, Gabriele Cavalera, also spoke at the event. Many former prize-winners also participated, including Thomas Friedman, Wolf Blitzer, Helene Cooper, Courtney Kube, Mark Mazzetti and Ellen Nakashima, as well as other authoritative Italian and American journalists and US administration officials.
