Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani on Wednesday said he was in favour of the
European Union's unity and of a European army, speaking on the
sidelines of an event for the reconstruction of Ukraine in
Milan, when asked by reporters about Deputy Premier, Tranport
Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini who has stated that
Italy must work with the United States for peace in Ukraine .
"Debates are always welcome.
"Our position, that of Forza Italia, is that we are in favour of
the EU's unity, which must work for the West's unity", said
Tajani, also speaking as the leader of the centre-right party.
The foreign minister also stressed that football-like "fandoms
are useless".
Speaking about US President Donald Trump and Salvini's position,
Tajani said the government's foreign policy is designed by the
premier with the foreign minister.
"I am pro-Europe, a convinced pro-European", stressed Tajani,
noting he would not be part of an anti-European government.
"Since I am convinced that this government always makes choices
that go in the direction of Europe's unity, I support the
government's action", he noted.
And speaking about differences with Salvini over a European
army, Tajani said everyone had the right to their opinions but
he was "in favour".
"We have always been in favour of a European defence", he
stressed.
On Tuesday, Tajani hailed European Commission President Ursula
von der Leyen's announcement of a plan to 'rearm Europe' in the
face of Russian aggression against Ukraine, which was instead
criticized by Salvini.
