The cooperation between Italy and Japan is based on respect and reciprocal trust, which are principles that should be fostered and developed by the international community and include open markets and reciprocal cooperation that create the conditions to maintain peace worldwide, Italian President Sergio Mattarella said on Wednesday at the end of an event organized at the headquarters of business association Confindustria in Tokyo.
Between Italy and Japan there is "full cooperation based on respect and reciprocal trust.
"They are principles and values that we hope will be maintained and developed in the international community: they are those of the opening of markets, the opening of reciprocal cooperation in the awareness of a reciprocal enrichment and interdependence which is created and which highlights the conditions for which peace is guaranteed in the world", Mattarella said at the event attended by Italian and Japanese business leaders during his official visit to Japan.
Praising the relationship between the European Union and Tokyo thanks to the elimination of tariffs, Mattarella said that, "today the integration between the two markets is increasingly closer, thanks to the economic partnership agreement (EPA) signed in 2019 by Tokyo and Brussels which eliminated tariffs on European exports towards Japan and vice versa, far from a return to protectionism".
The president went on to says that "the Japanese economy, which is among the first in the world" has increasingly become a strategic partner for Europe as part of a commitment to build intercontinental relationships that support "peace, stability and prosperity".
"The idea of a free and open Indo-Pacific is essential to the world's development" and to ease tensions - an "alternative between cooperation and demands to dominate", noted the president.
Mattarella also highlighted in his address that "the close relationship that unites the European Union and Japan is the outcome of a common feeling: the awareness that only a relationship between equals in international life brings widespread advantages and that this is based on the law and on the institutions organized for this aim".
