Prosecutors in Reggio Calabria are officially probing on double murder charges the last wife of late Forza Italia (FI) lawmaker Amedeo Matacena and his mother Raffaella De Carolis who died in Dubai respectively on September 16 and June 18 of 2022, investigative sources told ANSA on Tuesday.
Prosecutors Sara Parezzan officially placed under investigation Maria Pia Tropepi, 43, the last wife of the former MP, who was in the United Arab Emirates at the time of his death to flee a conviction for providing external support to the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate.
Matacena was joined by his mother in the Emirates a few months before the pair's deaths.
State attorneys have ordered to exhume the two bodies and autopsies have been scheduled on October 1.
Tropepi, originally from Lamezia Terme in Calabria, resides in Dubai and Italy.
After her husband's death, she opposed the repatriation of his body claiming he wanted to be cremated.
But Matacena's children were able to bring their father's body back to Italy and buried him at the cemetery of Formia.
