A doctor was stabbed by a former
patient in the psychiatric ward of Bolzano's San Maurizio
Hospital late on Monday in the latest in a string of attacks on
health workers in Italy.
The male assailant, aged 57, struck the doctor in the back with
a kitchen knife, dropped the weapon and fled, sources said.
The doctor was not seriously injured.
Police tracked the man down at his home.
He subsequently admitted to the attack but gave no a plausible
justification for it.
The attacker was charged and initially released, as it was
considered unlikely that he would try to flee justice, but the
city's police chief made an urgent request for him to be
detained given the seriousness of what he did.
