Captain Daniel Maimon Toaff, a
23-year-old Israeli soldier with Italian citizenship, was among
four Israeli soldiers killed Tuesday during fighting in the Gaza
Strip, the Italian Jewish Community announced on Wednesday.
Toaff, the deputy commander of the Givati Brigade, was an
Italian citizen, as confirmed by the Italian embassy in Israel.
He was the great-grandson of the late Elio Toaff, the chief
rabbi of Rome for half a century who died in 2015 at 99.
Together with Toaff, three Staff Sergeants were also killed in
Tel al-Sultan in the southern Gaza Strip after a hidden
explosive device detonated, according to the IDF: Agam Naim, 20,
Amit Bakri, 21 and Dotan Shimon, 21.
Agam Naim, a paramedic serving in a combat role, is the first
female soldier to be killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of
the war, the IDF said.
